Having Fun in New Haven, CT During the Fall
Summer is winding down, and fall is just around the corner. Some of you may be discouraged about summer being over, but do not fret. There are plenty of fun things to do in fall, such as viewing the colorful foliage and picking pumpkins. Halloween is also drawing near, and celebrating that is always fun.
Celebrate the arrival of fall by checking out some of New Haven’s best fall activities.
Pumpkin & Apple Picking
One of New Haven’s most popular fall activities is pumpkin picking. Local farms, such as the Belinsky Family Farm, allow you to pick your own pumpkins with friends and family. Once you get some, you can carve them into jack-o-lanterns for Halloween. Or, you can take them home and make delicious treats, like pumpkin pie or pumpkin cheesecake.
Apple picking is another popular pastime during the fall season. Take a family excursion to a local orchard and spend the day picking fresh apples. Bring them home with you to make apple pie, caramel apples, and other fun treats.
Bishop’s Orchards is open through October, so stop by to pick some apples.
Go Hiking to See the Foliage
A major highlight of the fall season is getting to see the beautiful foliage. The foliage season begins in late September for Connecticut, and this is when the leaves change to gorgeous shades of red, orange, and brown. Try going on a hike through a local park to get a firsthand look at the seasonal changes.
One of the best hiking spots in New Haven is East Rock Park, as its collection of trees make it a great place to view the foliage. Another good hiking spot is Sleeping Giant State Park, a popular historical destination in Hamden. It has its own hiking trails that offer scenic views of the surrounding area, which are great for viewing the colorful foliage.
Take the chance to view the fall colors before the winter chills knock the beautiful leaves away.
Navigate a Corn Maze
If you are looking for something to do with your kids during the fall, think about visiting a local corn maze. There is something oddly fun about getting lost in a corn maze and trying to find your way out. Corn mazes come in many shapes and sizes, and there are plenty to check out in the Greater New Haven area.
Bishop’s Orchards, which was mentioned above, has its own corn maze. The Rose Orchards Farm has a corn maze that you can check out as well. After going through the Rose Orchards maze, feel free to go for a quick hayride and get a tour of the surrounding area.
Visit a Haunted House
Halloween is approaching, and one of the best ways to get into the spirit is by visiting a haunted house. Some people need a rush of adrenaline at this time of year, and try to scratch that itch by visiting some ghoulish destinations. If you are looking for a good scare, there are a few haunted houses to visit in New Haven.
One popular destination is the Trail of Terror, which opens in late September. Along the trail, visitors can discover an assortment of ghoulish sights. Another option is Haunted Isle at the Shore Line Trolley Museum. This attraction features a trolley ride that leads to a nightmarish forest.
If you need more scares, be sure to check out New Haven’s other great haunted destinations.
Go to a Football Game
With the arrival of September, the new football season is well underway. With the University of New Haven and Yale University nearby, it is not hard to attend a game with your friends. Pick up some tickets, watch your favorite teams compete, and grab some snacks.
If you are a big football fan, why not have a tailgating party before attending the game? Grab some burgers to grill, and have your friends bring some drinks too. The temperature is going to be dropping soon, so spend some time outside before the winter chill settles in.
